Selling cars online: a guide for independent dealers

Buyers do their homework on a phone long before they call. Win that research stage and the sale is half done. Here's how to make your online listings work.

Write listings that answer questions

A good listing pre-empts the buyer's questions: trim and spec, mileage, service history, MOT, number of owners, any advisories, and what's genuinely good about this particular car. Be specific and honest — vague listings get fewer, lower-quality enquiries, and overclaiming creates problems later under the Consumer Rights Act.

Photos do the selling

  • Shoot in good, even light against a clean background.
  • Cover every angle: front three-quarter, sides, rear, interior, dash with mileage, boot, engine bay, and any wear honestly.
  • Lead with your strongest exterior shot.
  • Keep the order consistent across your stock so your forecourt looks professional.

ForecourtOnline can auto-arrange and crop photos and even pull manufacturer stock images, so listings look sharp without hours of editing — see stock management.

Be found on Google

Most buyers arrive via search, not a portal. A fast, mobile-first, server-rendered site with proper vehicle structured data helps Google understand and surface your stock. Speed matters too — a slow page loses the buyer standing on a rival's forecourt. (It's why our websites are built the way they are.)

Distance selling and deposits

If a customer buys without visiting — fully at a distance — consumer contract rules can give them cancellation rights that don't apply to an in-person forecourt sale. Most car sales still involve a visit and handover, but if you sell remotely, set out clearly how deposits, delivery and cancellation work before taking money. Always make refundable vs non-refundable deposit terms explicit and in writing.

Turn enquiries into sales

Speed of reply is the single biggest lever. A buyer who fills in a form and hears nothing for a day has already messaged three other dealers. Get every enquiry into one place, reply fast, and track who you've spoken to. Offering an easy way to ask a question or book a viewing — including WhatsApp and an enquiry form on every listing — lifts conversion noticeably.

The quick checklist

  1. Detailed, honest descriptions.
  2. 8–15 sharp, consistent photos per car.
  3. A fast, mobile-first site that ranks.
  4. Clear deposit and (if relevant) distance-selling terms.
  5. Every enquiry in one inbox, answered fast.
